Article #76 - Birds

 It may be and is often asked, “what is the use of birds” Judging from the conduct of many men and most boys we would conclude they were of no use, save to gratify a worse than idle sport We are too apt to look upon them as things that exist without any immediate benefit to man being somewhat familiar with the science of Ornithology and most American birds I feel that the community sustain a great loss from the want of a more general knowledge upon this subject.

Article #73 - Thoughts which spring from Natures Beauties

          Written for the Journal

Cast thy thoughts upon the heaving

Waves which swell lifes onward sea;

And e’er many winds have swept them,

Its own despair with words of faith and hope

Life hath nought else that may supply its plan

Void is ambition, cold is vanity

            The martyrs for the right

            While you betray the cause of truth

It was remarked by some one that day was worth a year of common life – be that as it may the author of that remark must count time by thoughts, feelings and heart throbs – not by figures on a dial, but why require so many days of common life to equal it? it should not be – those same sentiments – inspired thoughts & high aspirations – those same vivid pictures

  To his sometimes faltering heart
