Article #67 - A few definitions

 

Character – The only personal property which every one looks after for you

Pen – A lever small enough to be used by one man but strong enough to raise the whole world

Sword – The first hope of the oppressor, and the last hope of the oppressed. Passions special pleader in folly’s Court of appeal

Scholar – A diver for pearls, who generally loses his breath before he gathers much treasure

Tobacco – Dust for the nose, ashes for the mouth and poison for the stomach

Life – One to whom we are always introduced without our consent but whom we seldom bid

good bye without regret

War – Congregational worship of his satanic majesty, murder to music

Duel – A strange old custom according to which men suffering from inflam[m]ation attempt

to cure themselves by bleeding somebody else

Ball Room – A confined place in which poor creatures are compelled by fashion to hard labour

Napoleon – A naughty boy who was put in a corner because he wanted the world to play with

Newspapers – The great generals of the people who have driven the enemy from the fortified

heights of power and compelled him to give battle in the open field of thought
