Article #93 - Dry Weather Committee
Report of the Dry Weather Committee
The committee appointed by Pocopson Lyceum to attend a meeting of the Ercildoun Lyceum held 9th Mo 12th 1852 (having attended that meeting) report as follows –
Happy would we feel in being able to present you the meeting as it was, with its animated spirit and general interest manifested in the cause of mutual improvement, – its order and system of buisiness [sic], – its freedom and independence in dicussion and sentiment, – its
extensive variety of matter, and jocular humour, which rendered the whole entertaining and instructive, – this however we cannot do, nor is it our duty, but merely to report concerning the method persued [sic] and means employed in promoting the objects to which it is devoted, – and as these are somewhat similar to our own, it will probably be best to speak of them in connexion or comparison, – first then in reference to the monthly manuscript which we term the Journal, and appoint but one person as Editor; we notice they appoint two, one an assistant; the propriety of this we leave to the consideration of the members with the sujjestion [sic] whether or not the non-appearance of the journal at times might not be prevented by having the assistant to furnish it where the Editor cannot. We observed also that questions coming before the Lyceum
are produced by a member appointed for that purpose, and that these questions are refe-
rred by the meeting to individuals for answers; and further that at each meeting some subject is selected upon which four persons are appointed to write and produce their Essays to the succeeding meeting, this as a means for promoting the object of this Association we feel disposed to recommend to your consideration for adoption. These points relative to their proceedings are
all we deem necessary to notice, since otherwise their regulations are similar to our own. It is proper here to give notice of the change made in their time of meeting which will hereafter be on the 2nd first day in each month. We deem it not improper to acknowledge that we feel greatful [sic] for the kind attention shown us and also for the generous privigles [sic] granted us in their meeting.
