In 1870, thirteen-year old Evaline was a domestic servant in house of farmer Thomas Harvey and his wife, Anna, who kept house. The Harvey’s had two children: Hannah aged two years and Sallie, aged nine months. While working at and living with the Harveys, Evaline’s home was right next door to the Locust Grove Schoolhouse. Evaline joined the School in October of 1870; Eliza Slack was her teacher. Evaline attended school 50.5 days out of 149 that school year. She received marks of “four” (out of five) for both conduct and progress.
