Article #92 - Scolding Women

What evidence have we that women scold worse on washing day than on any other occasion?

            This to me I acknowledge is a stumper – because my limits are observation and what

has been gleaned from tradition, though I shall attempt to answer it from personal

observations, while roaming about from place to place.

            Judging from what I know of the disposition of females contrasted with the gentlemen

the inference is that they enjoy the greatest amount of real pleasure when they are prosecuting that part of their vocation which requires the least physical labour, clutter or dust, smoke, derangement of unsuitable dress in their estimation perchance they are call[ed]on by who they have a kind of particular respect for and who has never seen them fresh from the wash tub. Besides the spoiling of their complection and rendering their hand invisible while in company

under a pair of kid gloves. Judging from these few things that washing is not an agreeable task

it must be annoying for the mind especially when the men have been spreading lime, [? sowing] plaster and such-like, when it would have tried the patience of Job of old, and under such circumstances I have heard a little home thunder in more places than one or a dozen

which was preceded by a flash of lightning varying in brilliancy to the offense or excitement. It appears this subject attracted  the attention of an individual years ago to such an extent as inspires the muse to action and then to sing of which all doubtless are familiar who has once heard it repeated as the truth is much more easily retained than fiction
